The Italian experience in the USA is of vital importance in ethnic and cultural studies today. Numerous sources have been used for reference. In my opinion, The Godfather is one of the greatest American films of the 20th century. The movie is based on a novel by the same title by Mario Puzo, adequately depicts the Italian experience in the USA. I believe the film sheds light on the importance of the family as the most fundamental element of the society, the relationship between a father and a son, a son’s way of life versus his parents’ expectations. I can relate with the characteristics of the family and its subtleties that are part of what most Italians go through in USA. In the novel, ‘Christ in Concrete' by Pietro DiDonato, I realize that the author takes the Italian experience as viewed by an immigrant family chasing the American Dream. I think that the novel is that the novel, “The Italian Experience,” is influenced by religion, effects of faith, trials the Italians of Roman Catholic church face and how they sail through them. My goal in this paper is to discuss the Italian experience in the USA from the film, The Godfather, part one and ‘Christ in Concrete.'
To achieve this goal, I have arranged this paper into six major sections; the first three will cover personal experiences, the reason for choosing this experience and my view on the importance of the overall dialogue of the Italian experience based on the film, The Godfather, part one. The next two will cover various aspects of the Italian experience in the USA based on ‘Christ in Concrete.' I conclude my paper with the sixth section that offers my personal opinion on both of the sources that have been discussed above, on their influence on the Italian experience in the USA.
